Vietnam has officially unveiled the T-1, its first domestically developed light amphibious tank, marking an important step in the country’s Armed Forces modernization strategy.
The new armored vehicle is considered the most ambitious project ever undertaken by Vietnam’s defense industry in the armored vehicle sector and reinforces Hanoi’s efforts to expand domestic military production.
Inspired by the historic Soviet PT-76B, which was used by the Vietnamese Army during major conflicts of the last century, the T-1 was designed to offer enhanced operational capabilities. The vehicle features an enlarged hull equipped with seven road wheels on each side, along with a 470-horsepower diesel engine that allows it to reach speeds of up to 80 km/h on roads.
Its main armament is a 76 mm cannon with an automatic loading system, complemented by a coaxial machine gun and a remotely operated weapon station. The configuration was designed for infantry support missions, engagements against lightly armored vehicles, and defensive operations, while maintaining a balance between mobility, firepower, and amphibious capability.

The unveiling of the T-1 also highlights the strategic importance of this type of vehicle for Vietnam. With its extensive coastline and regions characterized by rivers, canals, and flooded areas such as the Mekong Delta, the ability to cross water obstacles without additional support can provide greater tactical flexibility to ground forces in a variety of operational scenarios.
